Texture in the Ice

Texture in the Ice

an oak leaf melting into the winter snow

What caught my eye was the way the oak leaf had "melted" into the snowy ice in the backyard.

The darkness of the leaf had absorbed the warm rays from the sun, and it was slowly making an imprint of itself.

I didn't notice until I was processing the image that the snow had a most unique texture.

The week of rain and thawing has made the snow have an almost granular texture.

If you click on the image, it will bring you to my website where you can click on the photo there to view a larger image.

The snow and leaf details will be much more visible.

I love the little surprises that aren't always visible when I take the image and are discovered while processing them.

Kind of like a new treasure!

ABC Wednesday - B is for Bottle

B is for Bottle............

car antenna sticking out through the snow

This little bottle stands about 5 inches high.

It is made of frosted blue glass and is in the shape of a pineapple.

It usually stands in one of my windows - the light from it makes it glow a most beautiful blue.

It must have been used to hold perfume at one time - I can't think of what else might go in it.

What do you think it was used for?

Red Berries in the Snow - My World

Red Berries in the Snow - My World

red berries in the white snow

The saw horses were put under the Burning Bush before the snow arrived.

They are almost covered now, as is most of the bush.

But the little red berries on this plant stand out so nicely against the whiteness of the snow.

We are getting quite a bit of rain right now which is very unusual for January, so I expect most of this snow will "shrink" down.

And then turn into an ice block as the temps plunge back down to normal.

An old New England phrase comes to mind: If you don't like the weather, just wait a minute, it will change.

ABC Wednesday - A is for Antenna

A is for Antenna............

car antenna sticking out through the snow

So we begin again with another round of ABC Wednesday. This has been a great meme that has been a lot of fun for over three years now.

We have a wonderful team that keeps it all going for us, and we owe them a big THANKS for their dedication. If you are interested in joining, you can find the link at the bottom of this post.

On to today's post - A is for antenna - a car antenna that is.

Looking closely at the photo, you can see the shadow of the almost buried antenna in the snow.

There are several cars lined up beside each other, and you can see that the snow doesn't go down along the side of the car, it is even with the one next to it.

That is a stupid amount of snow - and it is quite heavy to boot.

Now, if Mother Nature would give us a few days above freezing, it would at least shrink it down a bit.

Oh well, spring will arrive in about 8 1/2 weeks - and I can't wait!

Cabin in the Spring - My World

Cabin in the Spring - My World

log cabin in the early spring

My last post showed this same cabin covered in snow.

There are several other posts through the years on this blog that feature this cabin also.

This photo was taken in the very early spring, before all the beautiful green grass appeared.

In fact, if you look closely, you can see little brown tufts on the ground.

Those are mole hills and they were everywhere around these cabins that spring.

The photo with the snow certainly has a lot more charm and appeal.

Cabin in the Snow

Cabin in the Snow

a channel of sea water made by the outgoing tide

I have posted many photos of this cabin in the past, but this is the first one I have posted with the snow.

This is a former boy scout campground that is now maintained and owned by the town.

But they only maintain it during the summer.

Getting to it this time of the year is tricky.

It's not far from the road, but walking through thigh deep snow can be an experience.

This is as close as I could get, the trek was wearing me out, and my camera almost took snow dives a couple of times.

It is a beautiful spot though no matter what time of the year.

ABC Wednesday - Z is for Zucchini

Z is for Zucchini............

zucchini and knife on a cutting board

I'm late in posting my ABC post today, but there is a reason for that.

I had a very hard time finding a topic for this letter.

I had no photos of anything Z, they had all been used before in the previous ABC rounds.

So, I figured I would pick up a couple of oranges at the store today, and do "zest".

Never made it down town to the market, so I was back to square one.

But my Z topic was in my refrigerator the whole time, and it only took the preparations for dinner for it to finally dawn on me.

Preparing a stir fry, I started slicing my first ingredient.

And there was my Z - zucchini.

I think I need a vacation or something - the thinker was certainly not with it today!

Dandelions in the Grass- My World

Dandelions in the Grass - My World

yellow dandelions in the green grass in the spring

Dreaming of spring once again - and it's only mid-January.

These little yellow dandelions are considered a pesky weed by most as they tend to take over a green lawn in no time flat. This photo can attest to that!

But seeing even their cheery little faces would sure make this winter seem less dreary.

I have always enjoyed watching the life cycle of the dandelions - and blowing the little seeds off the top of the mature flowers is still just as fun as it was years ago.

A Tunnel to the Sea

A Tunnel to the Sea

a channel of sea water made by the outgoing tide

The outgoing tide created a channel of sea water in the sand.

It snaked around the rocks and stranded pieces of seaweed that arrived on the incoming tide.

Mother Nature creates such graceful patterns - glad we were able to catch it before too many footprints disturbed it.

ABC Wednesday - Y is for Yellow Forsythia

Y is for Yellow Forsythia............

yellow forsythia blossoms in the spring

The bright yellow of the Forsythia plant is a sure sign of spring.

And we won't be seeing them for another 4 months.

Just seeing these blossoms from last year brightens the spirits though.

I love to see those well cared for bushes that are just bursting with color, but a few sprigs can be pleasing too.

These shrubs are not native to our land, as most of them originated in Asia, but they are so abundant that it seems they have been here all along.

A much needed reminder of spring to get us through the remaining cold weeks of winter.

A Fine Layer of Snow

A Fine Layer of snow

fine snow on the pine needles

We woke up yesterday with over seven inches of snow - it was supposed to be only 2-3 inches according to the weatherman.

By this morning we were supposed to have an additional 6-10 inches.

We had just a little over an inch, and the gusting wind had blown it all around.

A fine layer was left on the small pine boughs in the back yard.

I bet the trees were all so happy for this small amount - their branches take a beating when the big ones come.

A Happy New Year to All!

A Happy New Year to All!

ice and snow on the pine needles

A brand new year and the last one of this decade.

How fast it has all gone!

Almost three years of blogging, and it has been made most enjoyable by all the friends I have gained over this time.

I never thought it would be this great, and I owe you all a big thank you.

I wish you and your families a very Happy New Year!
