ABC Wednesday - P is for Prickly

P is for Prickly............

a prickly looking round bloom on a plant

It appears to be quite a prickly plant.

But upon closer inspection, each one of those "spikes" is really the center of a tiny flower.

This little ball has tons of these tiny flowers - all with their centers much longer than the bloom.

And they are quite soft, not hard or hurtful at all.

I found this plant beside the lake this past summer.

Even though it was right at waist level as one walked in the water - no one bothered it.

Perhaps it's "prickly" appearance saves it from the curious little ones who spend much time beside it.

I don't know what kind of flower it is, but I was quite intrigued nonetheless.

This is the seventh round of ABC Wednesday. If you would like to join in please visit this site for the details.

  2. Your prickly plant is actually quite a pretty plant. I wish I could have enlarged the photo to see the little flowers better. Excellent P post.

  4. What an interesting flower! I've never seen one like it - and perhaps you're right. Perhaps its appearance saves it from being eaten or damaged? A bit like hoverflies' stripes stop things trying to eat them because they look a bit like wasps!

On behalf of the team, thanks for taking part in ABC Wednesday this week! :)

  9. Lovely photo, Kathy.

In all my time spent on lakes, I've never seen one of those. What a good find!

Just stopping in to say hello and to ask you how you've been. So how are you these days? Time is moving so fast; I can't keep up with anything!
