ABC Wednesday - B

(The Wordless Wednesday post is beneath this post.)

B is for Betta Fish .......

a blue betta fish in a bowl

This little blue Betta fish had such a personality.

I really believe that they recognize their owners - he always paid close attention - especially when he saw us eating,

This little life force was such good company, I do miss having him on my desk.

He was really hard to photograph through the water and the focus was hard to set with all his swimming, but the back fin and long tail have pretty details if you view the larger image.

Green Thumb Sunday - Trail Marker

Trail Marker for Green Thumb Sunday

For the last couple of weeks, I have been posting about a hike through a swamp.

The trails are maintained by the Audubon Society, and there are different colored markers posted on trees to mark the trail you are following.

We came upon this tree - gnawed down very nicely by a beaver.

I had to chuckle - that trail marker was pointing in a direction that I was not inclined to follow.

I think he was trying to tell us humans to find another trail and leave this area to him.

ABC Wednesday - A

A is for Apple .......

two red apples hanging in a tree

Last week we finished the first round of the alphabet, so this week begins anew with the letter A.

These apples were photographed last fall, and are the freshest to be found anywhere.

Picked right from the the tree, it was the best tasting Red Delicious Apple I had ever eaten.

So very crisp and sweet, the juice was delicious to slurp up - I can almost taste it just looking at it.

Surprisingly, this image has been one of my best selling stock images.

Taxes

Taxes

expense report ledger and pen

The camera has been on a bit of a vacation for the last week or so, and will have to be for the next month or so as well.

It is income tax season, and pulling all the reports together and closing up the year ends for a self employed family is a big job.

The paperwork is astonishing and the organizing and calculating has yet to begin.

I am most thankful for the computer and all the time and work it saves - I remember well the days of written ledgers with pages and pages of entries, and really don't want to go back there!

(The Wordless Wednesday post is beneath this post.)

Z is for Z-Car .......

The hood ornament of a 1986 Nissan 300ZX.

This little Z-car is a classic and such a joy to drive.

Her beautiful styling and curves are unlike the new Z-cars of today.

She handles superbly, and there is nothing like having the T-tops off on a gorgeous summer day.

Shivering beneath the two feet of snow surrounding her, I am sure she is dreaming of warm summer days.

I know I am!

Last week I posted an image about a hike through a swamp.

The image above shows the boards surrounded by swamp water.

The wood bridge was the last stable piece of the walkway.

The boards went for about a mile through the swamp until they just came to a stop.

Forced to retrace our steps, we walked the unsteady boards back to the little bridge.

So lush and green, the swamp was a peaceful yet unnerving way to spend the afternoon.

ABC Wednesday - Y

(The Wordless Wednesday post is beneath this post.)

Y is for Yellow Leaf .......

The ash trees turned a bright shade of yellow this past autumn.

The details in the leaves show just a tinge of green still remaining.

Makes for a bright cheery image on a cold winter day.

Green Thumb Sunday - Swamp Plants

Swamp Plants for Green Thumb Sunday

This swamp or marshland is one of several trails that is maintained by the Aududon Society in our state.

It was quite a harrowing experience walking this trail which was set literally in the center of a swamp.

There were planks, made by two 2x4 beams that were setting upon posts on either end. The posts were submerged, so all you saw were the planks, surrounded by oozing, bubbling, gurgling swamp water. The planks needed to be readjusted in some spots, as they had slipped completely off the posts.

When you stepped on a plank, it would dip in the center between the posts, and the rising water would surround your shoe. All this while keeping your balance, trying not to slip on the wet plank, praying the plank would hold, and just imagining how deep the water was if it did break.

I feared most for my camera, clutching it with one hand while my other one had a death grip on my husband's hand, arm, or shirt - stretching all the way out - not wanting too much weight on the center of those planks.

This image was taken while squatting down on one of those precarious planks, and holding my breath. I just couldn't pass that light up.

You can see all the floating algae around the plants. It has a unique, eerie beauty.

We had applied bug spray before we went in, but there really weren't that many around considering swamps are usually notorious for them.

I enjoyed this little adventure, but I think next time there is a swamp involved I will keep to the edges unless we have the canoe.

ABC Wednesday - X

(The Wordless Wednesday post is beneath this post.)

X is for X .......

upturned weathered roots of a tree

X was a hard one this week, so I had to use my imagination.

Mother Nature presented me with this tumbled mass of old weathered upturned roots and I took a picture - trying to capture the textures and patterns in the wood.

It wasn't until I got home and was processing the image that I saw the X that was made by the roots crossing each other.

There were many of these old upturned stumps that had been moved by the fierce flood waters that we had in the autumn.

There was even a whole stump like this one up high in one of the trees - floated up by the high water and caught in the tree's branches.

Hard for man to fight these forces - Mother Nature is always holding all the cards.
