ABC Wednesday - T is for Tugboat

T is for Tugboat..........

a red tugboat in the river

I always find it amazing how these little boats can move such big ships up and down the river.

We had the opportunity to watch two of them in action as they guided a huge ship through the two bridges that span the river.

It was like a perfectly choreographed dance.

Both tugs doing the same thing at the same time as the ship goes under alone.

They each wait and once it has gone through, they meet again at each side of the ship to guide it along.

The tides play a big part in the departure and arrival of the big vessels to port.

Many times they wait outside the harbor for the time to be just right to escort them in.

Always interesting to watch, that's for sure!

Memorial Day in the US

Memorial Day

an american flag against a blue sky

A federal holiday in the USA.

The last Monday in May is set aside each year for us to remember those who have died serving our country.

Flags are flown at half staff until 12:00 noon.

After that they are raised up to full staff.

This signifies that they will be remembered by us and their sacrifice has not been vain as we  continue to stand up or raise up to fight for liberty and justice in their stead.

And we can also do this because of their sacrifice.

Freedom isn't free.

ABC Wednesday - S is for Sandpipers

S is for Sandpipers..........

sandpiper birds along the edge of the ocean

These little guys were so hard to photograph.

Not only are they small, but they move so very fast.

Running along the edge of the waves as the come and go, they eat the little bugs in the seaweed.

I must have taken over thirty photos, and I only got two that I could use, and they are not really all that great.

Next time the tripod and a few camera adjustments might help in getting them a bit better.

ABC Wednesday - R is for Robins

R is for Robins..........

a long wood pier at the ocean

The Robins are very busy running around the yard.

Every few steps they stop and listen, then a quick peck in the grass fills their beaks with food.

Then they are off to the nest and the waiting babies.

Babies that stretch their fluffy heads up with their beaks wide open.

It is a lot of work for those parents - they spend more time out hunting for food than they do in the nest with the babies.

In a couple of weeks they will be gone - all grown and on their own.

It always amazes me how quickly it happens - another one of Mother Nature's miracles!

Happy Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day

purple lilac blooms in the spring

Dictionary definition of Mother:

a term of address for a female parent or a woman having or regarded as having the status, function, or authority of female parent.

So factual, not touching on all the wonderful feelings that one word can fill the heart with.

Happy Mother's Day to all the beautiful ladies around the world!

ABC Wednesday - Q is for Queen Anne's Lace

Q is for Queen Anne's Lace..........

a long wood pier at the ocean

A pretty wildflower that appears around mid summer in our area.

Queen Anne's Lace is also known as wild carrot, and it's roots smell like carrots.

The flowers are off-white, except for one tiny red one in the very center.

That one draws the insects for fertilizing the plant.

Legend has it that it is a drop of blood from Queen Anne when she pricked her finger with the needle while making the lace.

I think it is kind of neat how stories are made up from nature, and get passed down through the generations.

ABC Wednesday - P is for Pier

P is for Pier..........

a long wood pier at the ocean

So very long is this old wood pier at the ocean.

The wood has been weathered by the rain, sun, and salt air.

Every so often you feel a soft, rotting plank as you walk along.

And here and there you will find one missing.

The park people work on it a couple times a year to replace the rotting and missing planks, but that is not what worries me the most.

It's all those supporting beams underneath that have me concerned.

They are old, the water is very deep, and I don't believe they get any care.

I am glad to see they are thick, but the wiggling gets to me each time I see them moving in the water.

I would think they would ban us from going out on it if it got to be too dangerous.

Until then, I enjoy it and keep a cautious eye on the whole situation.
