ABC Wednesday - O is for Owl

O is for Owl............

an owl sleeping in a tree during a snowstorm

Back in February, I had a surprise visit one morning during a snow storm.

I posted about my owl visitor back then, and I showed a photo of him looking in the window at me.

But I saved this one especially for this round of ABC Wednesday.

He sat in that spot on the branch for about three hours.

In a snow storm, of all things.

He was so patient, but there were times he just couldn't help himself from falling asleep.

Usually he was bent way over, his head hanging down.

But I caught him before he started to droop this time.

He did a lot of napping that morning, but he didn't miss when the little mole he had been waiting for made its appearance.

I haven't seen him since that morning, but I often hear him hooting in the night and early morning.

Lunch at the Lake

Lunch at the Lake

a lake view on a summer day

The sun was shining brightly this morning so we decided to make a lunch and take it down to the lake for the first time this season.

By the time we left, the clouds had moved in - no problem, the air was still warm and beautiful.

By the time we arrived there - it was raining.

No problem, we sat at a picnic table under a large old pine tree and ate our lunch.

And while we were sitting there, I heard a familiar sound.

Off in the distance, the loon was calling.

He didn't seem to mind the rain either.

Glad we didn't let it change our mind.

Our Dear Earth

Our Dear Earth

blue glass ball simulating the earth

One blue sky above us
One ocean lapping all our shores
One Earth so green and round
Who could ask for more

And because I love you
I'll give it one more try
To show my rainbow race
That it's too soon to die.

These lyrics were written by Pete Seeger to the song titled: My Rainbow Race

I heard this song performed by The Shaw Brothers many years ago, and the words always stuck with me.

I thought it was an appropriate post for this Earth Day 2011.

ABC Wednesday - N is for Night

N is for Night............

hot air balloons glowing at night

Night photography for me is a rare thing.

Even though I have the correct equipment for it, I really never was able to get the knack for it.

In the days of film, it was so expensive to keep developing the useless images, that I gave up on doing it.

Digital has made it more affordable, but I rarely get out at night these days.

And with the gas prices the way they are, I don't see any unneeded excursions in the near future.

Out of Hibernation

Out of Hibernation

motorcycle exhaust

The boys have taken the motorcycles out of their winter quarters.

It took a bit of priming and coaxing, but they finally started with their freshly charged batteries.

My son's only needed a bit of a tune-up, and he just got back with her from her first ride of the season.

Ours is going to need some work before she is ready to go.

A new front tire is in order, and some work with her electrical parts and motor is also on the list.

It will take some time, but as the cooler days turn warmer, she should be ready to welcome us into summer.

ABC Wednesday - M is for Mouse

M is for Mouse............

a gray mouse in the clover

We were in a public park with many people around.

We just happened to be standing next to an area that was roped off - and I caught him out of the corner of my eye.

Nestled in the lush clover was this little gray mouse - having a snack in the late afternoon sun.

Nobody else paid him any mind - but I just had to snap his photo.

And all the while thinking - glad you are out here and not running around under my house where the mouse traps are.

He knows where he belongs - out in the great outdoors - which is perfect for all of us.

Closer to the Ceiling - My World

Closer to the Ceiling - My World

corner of a new bed mattress

 I had to laugh.

We made a big purchase this past week on something we hadn't done since we were first married.

And my, have there been changes since then!

Our new bed mattress and box spring were delivered today, and they are sure different from the ones they hauled away.

This set is high - so high my legs swing in the air when I sit on the side of the bed.

My husband's first words - we are sleeping closer to the ceiling tonight - look, my foot can almost touch it.

An exaggeration for sure, but I'm worried about the middle of the night bathroom run, and not being able to find the floor!

Green Swamp

Green Swamp

green swamp in the summer

A scene from late spring of last year.

The swamp down our road - so beautiful all decked out in green.

And the clouds posed so perfectly in that beautiful blue sky.

It was one of those days when everything came together just right for a walk along the edge of the swamp.

ABC Wednesday - L is for Lighthouse

L is for Lighthouse............

lighthouse beyond the rock formation

The old stone Whaleback Lighthouse, just off the coast in the harbor, stands as a silhoutte against the sky.

I found the rock formation along the edge of the sea to be quite dramatic in the afternoon sun.

Together they make for a different view along the historic seacoast.

Tough Sprouts - My World

Tough Sprouts - My World

daffodil greens sprouting through the snow

I think these daffodils are just as anxious for spring as we are.

They are bound and determined to grow right through the cold snow that is still over them.

Tough and hardy they are.

The tulips that are beside them have sprouted too.

I love to see them as I pass by - won't be long now before their beautiful blooms have joined their leaves!

Rays of Sunshine

Rays of Sunshine

abstract lines in the sand

Look really closely.

Can you see them?

Those lines in the sand, created by the receding tide, made their own artwork.

To me, it looks like rays of sun, the kind we would draw in grammar school, with the sun up in the corner of the page.

Those hot rays, just streaming off the surface of the sun, reaching out their fiery fingers to warm the Earth.

Mother Nature did a better job with her artwork than any of my elementary drawings could ever do.
