Bench Beside the Ocean

Bench Beside the Ocean

a bench beside the ocean in the summer

After the weather we have had over the last few days, I am just dreaming of summer - and spending some time in this bench beside the ocean.

The worst wind storm we have ever had made a total disaster of our back yard.

Hundreds of sticks and branches everywhere.

The roof took some mighty blows and has the bruises to show for it.

Too nervous to go to bed last night - thoughts of being pierced with tree spikes kept me jumping up every time the fierce gusts threw them on the roof.

No power, so sitting by candlelight until they subsided was the only option.

March is certainly coming in like a lion this year!

ABC Wednesday - F is for Full and Frozen

F is for Full and Frozen............

the dam at the beginning of spring

This is the last in the series of dam photos I have been posting the last few days.

This photo shows the top of the dam, and for that time of the year, it was pretty full of water.

It gets lowered in the fall, and during the summer the water slowly falls over the top edge - especially when the boats kick up a wake.

There was still a bit of ice left on the frozen surface and that stuck around for another week or so before it went out.

The spring rains hadn't started before this photo, so the flowing water in the previous posts was pretty mild.

The flow really gets going once the rains come and fill up this little lake.

The Dam Waters - My World

The Dam Waters - My World

flowing water at the dam

My last post was kind of a mystery for my readers.

Carol Wilkerson had the correct answer when she thought it was gushing water from a dam. Yeah, Carol!

This image is of the side across from where we were standing. The water over that side was moving even more fiercely than the outlet on our side.

This photo was taken standing above the dam. In the last post's photo, we had climbed down the dirt bank and were standing below the dam along the river.

Hard to imagine that this small wall was holding back the whole lake.

The power of nature and man working together was fascinating!

Wordless Wednesday - Friday Edition - Gushing Water

Wordless Wednesday - Friday Edition - Gushing Water

gushing water with much force

I haven't done a Wordless Wednesday post in quite a while, so here is today's entry for the Friday Edition.

Can you guess what this water is gushing from?

It was taken last spring, right before the ice went out on the lake.

It looks small in the photo, but it really wasn't.

Very loud and with such force - it was scary yet exciting to be there.

Let me know what you think - the answer will be coming in another post!

ABC Wednesday - E is for Egg

E is for Egg............

decorated gold egg macro

A decorated golden egg, that is.

This egg is part of a tie-back for a curtain. Would you have guessed that?

One end has the hanger, and the other end has a golden yellow tassel hanging from it.

This little bauble was on the clearance rack after the holidays, and for a couple of bucks, I couldn't resist.

It can only be used as a photo prop though.

With just one, the curtains would look awfully silly with only one side tied back - not to mention, it just doesn't fit the decor.

As a stock image, it has more than paid for itself, so that justifies keeping it around in case it is needed for another shoot.

Iced Red Berries - My World

Iced Red Berries - My World

red berries covered in ice

Winter marches on in our area and the three week break we have had from snow has been grand.

Tomorrow will bring a heavy dose of new snow, and it will almost be welcomed.

Almost.

The ugly brown and gray snowbanks will be gorgeous again.

The icepack hill that is called a driveway will have some traction with the new snow.

The snow will add to the water table this spring.

The back and the hips and the arms will be protesting, but that is only bad thing to all those other good things.

I guess we can put up with that.

ABC Wednesday - D is for Driving Range

D is for Driving Range............

golf balls on the driving range

A glimpse from a summer past.

A hot July afternoon, a bucket of balls, and a golf club driver.

Trying to drive the ball as far as you can with some accuracy in the landing is the name of the game at the driving range.

The boys are pretty good at it, and try as they may to teach me the "hang" of it, I just can't grasp it.

But, put me on the putting green, and I will beat them every time!

Breaker Wall at Low Tide

Breaker Wall at Low Tide

the harbor breaker wall at low tide

The breaker wall doesn't look quite so intimidating or all that difficult to walk on at this angle.

But trust me, it is just an illusion.

It looks a lot shorter than it actually is, and the outgoing tide makes it seem like such nice, docile water.

Once again - don't believe it.

This angle is also of the protected side of the harbor where there is a small beach area.

The other side of this wall has deep sea water that pounds against the rocks - all the time.

The wall acts as a dam, and as the tide comes in around the end of the wall, it covers this beach.

See the dark big rocks along the side of the wall - that is the water line - just the light colored ones on the top are showing when the tide is fully in.

Even though my family loves it, those rocks are not the place for me at high tide.

Even at low tide, I can only manage about half way along that wall.

ABC Wednesday - C is for Chocolate

C is for Chocolate............

gooey chocolate covered cherry candy

Gooey chocolate covered cherries.

A treat for my family around the holidays.

Not one of my favorites but my kids love them.

Actually, I think they are just about the only chocolate that I don't like.

I have always considered chocolate to be one of the food groups - a necessity that we cannot be without.

A bite of the dark variety each day is considered to be very good for you.

Glad to be doing at least one thing right!

Oak Leaf in the Snow - My World

Oak Leaf in the Snow - My World

oak leaf in the white snow

My last post showed only a portion of this oak leaf that was sinking into the snow.

This image shows the entire leaf.

I like the contrast of the dark leaf against the whiteness of the snow.

And look at all that dirty snow - littered with plant and tree matter that has collected over the winter.

The next snowfall will completely obliterate this small work of art, but who knows what will appear next!
