ABC Wednesday - I is for Iris

I is for Iris............

historical houses at strawbery banke in nh

I didn't expect to find this little beauty while on a hike in the middle of the woods.

I always thought of the Iris as being a cultivated plant that was spread by it's roots.

There was only this one set, with three flowers on it.

It was growing alongside a beautiful spray of ferns, and the purple really stood out against all that green.

I am thinking it must be a wild variety of iris, but I am still not sure how it got to be where it was.

It was the only one around, and I am glad we were there at the right time to catch it in all it's glory!.

This is the fifth round of ABC Wednesday. If you would like to join in please visit this site for the details.

  2. I don't go out much, especially out to nature, but when do that once a year, I always feel ecstatic whenever I see one beautiful flower amidst a whole area of green grass or shrubs. Makes my eyes focus on that one lovely thing. :)

  4. Wonderful Kathy and among one of my favorite species of Iris'! We had them when living in Maine.

But, as of yet, I have had no success at all with them down here. I think it is just too hot.

I do so hope all is going well for you. I envy your sunshine. We are working on 2 solid weeks of rainy days.

I hope you have a terrific day!!

  5. That's beautiful! As you say, the green of the ferns really intensifies the colour!

Sometimes I think seeds travel further than you think. Maybe a bird picked up this one and dropped it into the wood?
