I took this image earlier this summer, and until just a couple of weeks ago, I didn't know what kind of berry they were. I ran across them while reading and was happy to find they are called Pokeberries.

It was the first time I have seem them, and I thought those pink stems were quite something.

The birds were scrambling over themselves to get at them and they didn't appreciate me being around so I tried to make it quick.

While I was snapping this, the boys were about 20 feet away checking out their find.

As they put it - I almost lost the both of them in one pop.

Come back next week to see what their extraordinary find was.

  1. Poison berries.

But they do look good enough to eat.

I haven't been around for a while so I thought I stop by and 'tag' you. Hope you don't mind. Stop by my place and 'pick up' the rules.

  6. Wonderful shot Kathy. But if thse are what they think are then it's a good thing the boys didn't eat any.

When I was little and we lived in Arkansas for a while we had these every where. We use to smash them. They have a beautiful color in the juices. But our mothers didn't care for it too much because it will set permanent stains.

Also they are highly poisonous if ingested. I am not positive that I have the right berry from the right tree but they sure look like the ones we use to plat with when I was a kid.

    Great shot as always!!:-)))

  11. Hi Jackie - you are right - they are poisonous to us mammals - but not to the birds. And, here I thought, if the birds could eat them we could too. The seeds are poisonous - they pass right through the bird's system, but we digest them and they kill us.
They make a great photo anyway.

  13. That's a great shot. I didn't know that they had pink stems. I'm sure that helps attract the birds!
