ABC Wednesday - K is for Kilowatts

K is for Kilowatts.............

a macro of an electric meter showing the kilowatthours

A bit boring as far as a photo goes, but it does do well as a stock image.

This little meter tracks our electricity usage and it measures that use in kilowatts.

I really hate to see that little dial in the middle spinning so quickly that you can't read it - the dollar signs add up way too quickly!

Luckily it was slow during this picture - the numbers are readable for once.

In this country we usually use the Imperial System for measuring that includes inches, pounds, and gallons.

We measure our electricity in kilos, which is part of the Metric System.

I think each of these systems work as long as one is used exclusively. I have a problem when I try to convert one to the other.

I bet most people don't even give it much thought as most of the world uses the Metric System, so there is no need for them to convert.

We will catch up someday!

This is the third round of ABC Wednesday. If you would like to join in please visit this site for the details.

  6. We converted from the imperial to the metric sytstem in the UK, but we still have miles. Stock images I find come in very useful for the abc's. Definitely an original one.

  12. I don't play ABC Wednesday, but I'm always interested to see what people come up with as photo subjects for this meme on some of the blogs that I visit. I think K would be one of the harder letters. Kilowatt is a very clever one for K.

  14. In the summer this one spins out of control and in the winter it's the gas one, I guess that's why I work :)

  15. Ummmm.....Kilowatt isn't metric.

Kilo, is a prefix meaning 1000. A "kilo"in normal usage is short for "kilogram". You could say 1,000 miles is a kilomile, but we just don't do it that way.

The unit of measure in a kilowatt is the watt, which is measure of power. Your meter is reading kilowatthours, which is a measure of energy.

While the units are similar, the proper SI unit for energy would be the Joule.
